Google Reader for S60 Phone

POSTED BY Jack on Jul 29 under Mobile Service, N95 Software, N95 Usage

Right after Picasa another Google’s product gets optimized for our lovely S60 device and it looks much better now. And yes, that’s for N95 too.

There are several UI improvements; new Google Reader version is specifically optimized for viewing on S60 phones via default Safari based browser and offers almost the same functionality as the desktop version.

Of course, it is highly suggestible to set up your feeds in the desktop version, but then you can read and filter it by star, tag, or feed.

Beside the cosmetic improvements, newly updated reader forces opening all outgoing links in the new window, just like the desktop version which is great solution in my personal opinion, especially considering that Safari browser still lacks trivial open in new widow option!

You can try it by pointing default phone browser to http://www.google.com/reader/m/

The /m version of the Google Reader has been out for quite long. It has lovely features and is really good for the N95. At approximately the same time, Google launched an /i version designed for the iPhone. You could actually select to use that one on your N95 as well by ending the URL with /i instead of /m. This version, though nice, is not as good for the N95.

Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, google started re-directing N95 browsers to the /i version instead of the /m version. And the worst thing, even if you manually enter the /m version, you end up with the /i version!

The /m version still exists! (try the URL in Opera) but there is no way to actually reach the N95-optimized page from the N95, you will only get the iPhone-version!

So, really, Google has a problem that they force certain browsers to the /i and /m version respectively, which would have been fine if you only accessed the generic page, but not if you accessed them directly!
