N95 Got Another Video Stream Service

POSTED BY Jack on Oct 13 under Mobile Service, N95 Software

Live video streaming service Stickam is expanding into mobile, announcing today that users will now be able to stream videos to their account with a cell phone. Similar to services like Qik and Flixwagon – who offer mobile video streaming exclusively - the service is initially being offered with Nokia N95 and S60 series phones.

Like other Stickam videos, mobile streams can be embedded elsewhere with copy and paste code, so live streamers can place their videos on their own websites and blogs. Broadcasters will also be able to view stats like the number of people watching as well as their chat room from the Stickam Mobile application. For users looking to view Stickam mobile video streams, they can be found under a new “Mobile” section that has been added to the “Live Streams” section of the site.

Nokia will Have Touch Screen N-series phone

POSTED BY Jack on Oct 11 under Besides N95, N95 General

Hey, it’s not like you really expected Nokia to ride the coattails of its N95 / N96 forever without adding in a dash of innovation, right? At a recent Nokia event held in New Delhi, Devinder Kishore (the director of marketing for Nokia India) was quoted as saying that “We will have lots of touchscreen phones coming up, including an N-series device very soon.” Granted, it’s not at all shocking to hear that the engineers in Espoo are already conjuring up touch-friendly N-series handsets, but at least you know there’s a fingertip-lovin’ Nokia coming for you if the XpressMusic 5800 just ain’t rubbing you the right way.

Apple Can’t Control iPhone

POSTED BY Jack on Oct 8 under Besides N95

The NPD Group offered a bit of insight into the carrier-jumping habits of original iPhone buyers way back when and, as you might expect, it’s now back at it and taking a stab at determining exactly where the iPhone 3G’s users are coming from. According to the group, between July and August of this year, 30 percent of iPhone 3G buyers ditched their existing carrier to buy the phone, which is a somewhat significant uptick from the 23 percent of consumers overall that switched carriers during the same time period. Of that 30 percent, 34 percent of ‘em switched from Verizon, 24 percent came from T-Mobile, and 19 percent came from Sprint. That same report also pegs the BlackBerry Curve, BlackBerry Pearl, and the Palm Centro as the next best selling smartphones. In related news, the 2.2 firmware beta floating about has apparently turned up a few more hidden surprises — namely, support for Japanese emoji icons, an off setting for the auto-correction feature and, purportedly, support for Google Street View in the Google Maps application, although there’s unfortunately no screenshot evidence of the latter feature just yet.

Minor N96 Firmware Update Release

POSTED BY Jack on Oct 7 under N95 General

I just wanted to give everyone a quick heads up that Nokia has rolled out another firmware update for their ‘flagship model‘ and again without any major improvement!

It seems that somewhere deep inside of the Nokia software labs, something went terribly wrong to push them to release an another quick firmware update for Nokia N96!

This is obviously minor firmware update without any noticeable changes and I got a tip that it actually only fixes some minor ‘networking’ related bugs and that’s basically all I know at the moment.

Qik Loaded on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

POSTED BY Jack on Oct 7 under Besides N95

Massive congratulations to Qik, which has already somehow secured a spot in the Download! application loaded on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. Typically, to get Qik on your phone, you need to setup an account on your PC and then wait for an activation SMS, which contains a download link. This will make it easier than ever to use Qik for on-the-go live video streaming.

If you’re not familiar with it, Qik is a free application that allows you to send a live video stream straight from your phone to the internet, over WiFi or 3G. The application takes over your phone’s camera and allows you to livestream video no matter where you’re at. Viewers can also chat with you and their messages appear on your phone. It’s a great tool for videoing conferences or other live events, but it’s also great for anyone who simply wants to be able to instantly upload their videos without having to find a computer first.

You can already use Qik on your S60-powered smartphone, just head over to Qik.com on your computer. Note that Qik uses your phone’s data connection, so you’ll only want to use it if you have an unlimited data plan, or are in range of a WiFi access point.

Nokia E71 Wins

POSTED BY Jack on Oct 6 under Besides N95

…In the UK Mobile Choice Consumer Awards, apparently. It won best phone and best smartphone, although best camera phone was also Symbian OS-powered, the awesome Samsung i8510 - of which more in an editorial tomorrow. ‘Reader’s choice’ went to the iPhone - of course(!) Here’s the full list of winners.

I have a E71 and it is a fantastic phone. best s60 device yet.  however I found a bug in convertor that I couldn’t believe made it into the final firmware. fire up convertor, select temperature. try and type a negative amount into the program. found it amusing as I could work around it. I could type in a plus symbol but not a minus figure. go figure.
and a bad feature is that if I eject the memory card to transfer files for any reason when I restart the music application it says that its database is corrupt and needs to find all my music again.

It’s a good thing T-Mobile saw fit to give Android-hopefuls something a little more tangible to hold them over until October 22. T-Mobile has just posted a T-Mobile G1 emulator on a dedicated T-Mobile G1 web portal. After taking a 360 degree tour of the HTC-sourced T-Mobile G1, the online emulator gives you a sneak peak at the G1’s Android interface and navigation controls.

Nokia 3D weakening?

POSTED BY Jack on Aug 21 under N95 Hardware

Nokia’s N93 seemed to be blazing a trail for a new generation of phones equipped with 3D graphics acceleration, with the N95 and N82 strengthening this assumption. However, this year’s flagship device the N96 doesn’t have any 3D hardware, so has Nokia changed its mind? In a special editorial, AAS’s sister site All About N-Gage takes a look at what Nokia’s options are for 3D chips with particular regard to their recently launched N-Gage platform. Will they get together one day, or is this a doomed romance?
